Student Venture Capital Grant 2026

Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2 2026: Apply for Up to ₦50 Million Equity-Free Funding

The Federal Government of Nigeria has opened applications for Cohort 2 of the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), an initiative designed to support innovative student-led businesses and help promising ventures grow into commercially viable companies.

Through the programme, 50 outstanding student-led ventures will have the opportunity to receive up to ₦50 million each in equity-free funding. Successful applicants will also benefit from business validation, mentorship and support designed to help them take their innovations to market.

The programme is being delivered under the Federal Ministry of Education's Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) STEMM pillar and is also known as the Next Moonshot Initiative.

What Is the Student Venture Capital Grant?

The Student Venture Capital Grant is a Federal Government programme aimed at helping students turn innovative projects and businesses into scalable ventures.

Rather than supporting ideas that exist only on paper, the S-VCG is looking for projects that have progressed beyond the proof-of-concept stage and can demonstrate real-world potential.

The official programme portal says selected ventures can receive milestone-based funding, validation support, mentorship, business development assistance and national visibility.

This makes the opportunity particularly relevant to students already developing a product, technology, service or business that can solve a genuine problem.

How Much Can Applicants Receive?

Selected ventures in Cohort 2 can receive up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding.

The Federal Government says 50 student-led ventures will ultimately be selected for the second cohort.

Importantly, the funding is described as equity-free, meaning successful student founders are not being asked to give the government ownership of their businesses in exchange for the grant.

However, applicants should understand that receiving the maximum ₦50 million is not automatic. The programme uses a competitive selection process, and approved funding is linked to milestones.

According to the official S-VCG portal, successful teams unlock funding in tranches after reaching agreed milestones.

Who Can Apply for the S-VCG Cohort 2?

The programme is open to students currently enrolled in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Eligible institutions include:

  • Universities

  • Polytechnics

  • Colleges of education

Students from both public and private tertiary institutions can apply.

The lead applicant must generally be at least 300 level or its equivalent.

Students below 300 level can still participate as members of a team, provided the team is led by an eligible 300-level-or-above student.

Does the Business Need CAC Registration?

Yes.

One important requirement for Cohort 2 is that the project or innovation must have a business name or company registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria.

Students preparing to apply should therefore make sure their venture's registration details are available and accurate before submitting an application.

What Types of Businesses Are Eligible?

The S-VCG is focused on ventures connected to STEMM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences.

The official programme highlights areas such as:

Science

This can include scientific research, biotechnology and agricultural innovation.

Technology

Technology ventures may involve software, hardware, artificial intelligence and other digital solutions.

Engineering

Engineering-based projects can include machinery, infrastructure, industrial systems and other practical engineering solutions.

Mathematics

The programme also recognises ventures built around mathematical innovation, advanced analysis, financial modelling and data-driven solutions.

Medical Sciences

Healthcare and medical technology ventures can also fall within the programme's scope, including solutions involving healthcare delivery, medical devices and public health.

Applicants should focus on demonstrating what problem their venture solves, who needs the solution and how the business can grow.

You Cannot Apply With Only an Idea

One of the most important points prospective applicants should understand is that the programme is not designed for an undeveloped idea alone.

The official S-VCG portal states that a project or business concept must be beyond proof of concept and sufficiently developed to demonstrate real-world potential.

This means applicants should be prepared to show evidence that their venture has progressed beyond simply having an idea.

Depending on the nature of the business, this could include:

  • A working product or prototype

  • Early users or customers

  • Testing results

  • A developed technology or service

  • Market research

  • Revenue or commercial activity

  • Evidence of demand

  • A clear business model

Business Plan Requirement

Applicants should also prepare a clear business plan.

The official portal specifically states that applicants need a business plan containing expenditure milestones and key performance indicators (KPIs).

A strong application should therefore explain:

  • The problem being solved

  • The proposed solution

  • The target market

  • How the business makes money

  • Current stage of development

  • Competitive advantage

  • How the funding will be used

  • Expected milestones

  • Key performance indicators

  • Plans for future growth

What Are the Benefits of the S-VCG?

The Student Venture Capital Grant is not only about receiving funding.

Successful applicants can gain access to a wider support system intended to help student businesses become stronger and more commercially viable.

Potential benefits include:

  • Up to ₦50 million in equity-free funding

  • Business validation support

  • Structured incubation

  • Mentorship

  • Business development support

  • Feedback during the assessment process

  • National visibility

  • Inclusion in the S-VCG innovation portfolio

  • Support for achieving business milestones

The official portal says even qualified projects that are not selected for funding can remain visible through its Innovation Repository and may receive structured feedback.

Six Months of Mentorship for Successful Ventures

A major addition to Cohort 2 is the planned six-month mentorship programme for successful beneficiaries.

The Federal Government says the mentorship component is intended to connect student founders with experienced entrepreneurs and organisations as they work to build, grow and commercialise their ventures.

This is important because access to capital alone does not guarantee that a startup will succeed. Business guidance, market knowledge, networks and practical experience can also play an important role in helping young entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses.

Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2 Application Dates

The second cohort opened applications in September 2026.

The Federal Government announced that applications for Cohort 2 are open and will close on:

Application opening: September 2026

Application closing: 30 September 2026

The nationwide application mobilisation programme is also running during September, with the S-VCG team taking the initiative to campuses across Nigeria.

Applicants should not wait until the final day before submitting their applications because they may need time to prepare their business information and supporting materials.

How to Apply for the Student Venture Capital Grant

Interested and eligible students can apply online through the official S-VCG platform.

Step 1: Visit the official portal

Go to the official Student Venture Capital Grant website:

https://svcg.education.gov.ng/authentication/students-signup

Step 2: Select the student application option

The official platform provides a student registration and application pathway.

Step 3: Prepare your venture information

Applicants should be ready with information about their business, innovation, team and proposed funding requirements.

Step 4: Submit your business plan and required information

Make sure the information provided is accurate and that your business plan clearly explains the venture's objectives, expenditure milestones and KPIs.

Step 5: Complete the application before the deadline

Submit the application before 30 September 2026.

How to Improve Your S-VCG Application

Because the programme is competitive, applicants should avoid treating the application as a simple form-filling exercise.

Before submitting, make sure your application clearly answers these questions:

What problem are you solving?

Explain the problem in simple terms and show why it matters.

What is your solution?

Describe your product or service and how it addresses the problem.

Who are your customers?

Identify the people, businesses or organisations that would use or pay for your solution.

What evidence do you have?

If you already have users, customers, testing results, partnerships, sales or other evidence of demand, explain it clearly.

How will ₦50 million help?

Do not simply state that you need funding. Explain how the money would be used and what milestones the funding would help you achieve.

Can the venture scale?

Show how the business could grow beyond your campus or local market.

Is the Student Venture Capital Grant a Loan?

No. The S-VCG is a grant programme, not a conventional business loan.

The Federal Government describes the funding as equity-free, while the official portal describes it as milestone-based grant funding.

This makes it different from commercial loans, where borrowers normally have to repay the money with interest.

However, applicants should carefully follow the programme's rules and milestone requirements rather than assuming that every applicant will automatically receive ₦50 million.

Why Students Should Consider Applying

For students already building a serious technology, healthcare, agricultural, engineering or other STEMM-related venture, the S-VCG could provide more than financial support.

The combination of equity-free startup funding, mentorship, validation, incubation and national visibility could help promising student businesses move from an early-stage venture towards a commercially viable company.

The programme also gives students an opportunity to develop practical entrepreneurship experience while still connected to their tertiary institutions.

Conclusion

The Student Venture Capital Grant Cohort 2 is currently OPEN, and applications are scheduled to close on 30 September 2026.

Eligible Nigerian students with a developed STEMM-related venture should review the requirements carefully before applying. In particular, applicants should pay attention to the 300-level requirement, CAC registration, business-plan requirement and the requirement for the venture to have progressed beyond the proof-of-concept stage.
