The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) 2027 programme is now accepting applications from eligible secondary-school students across Africa.
The programme is designed for young Africans who are preparing for university and want to strengthen their academic skills, explore career opportunities, understand the university admissions process and develop their leadership abilities.
Run under Yale University, YYAS is a free college-access and leadership programme rather than a conventional university scholarship. Successful participants receive access to academic enrichment, university preparation, career guidance and a network of young leaders from across Africa.
For 2027, Yale will offer two programme options:
Online College Prep Workshop
Residential Leadership Summit in Rwanda
Students may indicate their preferred option when applying, but they can only be admitted to one programme.

Yale Young African Scholars is an academic and enrichment programme created for African secondary-school students who are preparing for higher education.
Rather than providing a university degree or direct undergraduate tuition scholarship, YYAS helps students prepare for the next stage of their education.
Participants can gain support in areas such as:
University admissions
Academic preparation
Career exploration
Financial-aid applications
Leadership development
Communication skills
Innovation and design
Building relationships with other young African leaders
Yale describes YYAS as a college-access programme aimed at helping African students prepare for tertiary education and future career opportunities.
The online programme will take place from 15 to 20 July 2027 and will last six days.
Approximately 240 students are expected to participate.
The workshop will cover areas including:
University application preparation
University admissions guidance
Career exploration
Academic preparation
Financial-aid guidance
Transitioning from secondary school to university
Connecting with other students from across Africa
Participants will take part online using platforms such as Zoom, so students will need reliable internet access and an appropriate device.
The online programme is completely free. Students who successfully complete the workshop will receive a YYAS Certificate of Completion in PDF format.
The second option is the YYAS Residential Leadership Summit, scheduled to take place in Rwanda from 7 to 15 August 2027.
Approximately 110 students are expected to be admitted.
The nine-day residential programme combines university preparation with leadership and personal development.
Topics include:
Leadership
Innovation
Design
21st-century skills
Academic preparation
University admissions
Financial-aid guidance
Career exploration
Networking with young African leaders
Participants will stay at a residential school campus during the programme.
The residential programme has no tuition cost and provides admitted participants with accommodation, meals and academic curriculum materials.
It is important to understand what “fully funded” means in this case.
YYAS does not charge tuition for either programme. The Rwanda Residential Leadership Summit also provides accommodation, meals and academic materials.
However, not every travel expense is automatically covered.
Students attending the Rwanda programme may need to arrange documents such as:
International passport
Visa or other required travel documentation
Travel to Rwanda
Return travel from Rwanda
Yale states that a limited number of need-based Travel Grants are available to admitted students living outside Rwanda. Applicants are automatically considered for this support, and any travel grant will be stated in the admission offer.
Therefore, applicants should not assume that admission automatically means all international travel costs will be paid.
