Applications are now open for the 2027 Mo Ibrahim Foundation Leadership Fellowship, a prestigious leadership development opportunity for talented African professionals interested in gaining high-level experience with major African and international institutions.

Each selected Fellow receives a $100,000 stipend for the fellowship period. The programme also provides exposure to policy development, strategic work, institutional leadership and professional networks.

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation established the Leadership Fellowships in 2011 to identify, support and mentor the next generation of outstanding African leaders.
The Ibrahim Leadership Fellowship is more than a financial award. It provides Fellows with practical experience inside major institutions involved in Africa's development, international trade, economic policy and governance.
During the 12-month programme, Fellows can gain experience in areas such as:
Policy research and development
Strategic planning
Economic development
International development
Governance and leadership
Project management
Research and analysis
International trade
Institutional policy processes
Fellows also receive direct exposure to senior leadership within their host organisations. After completing the programme, Fellows join the Now Generation Network (NGN), a network connected to the Foundation's programmes and young African leaders.
Three Fellows are selected each year, with placements across three major institutions:
The African Development Bank hosts a Fellow at its headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
The 2027 AfDB Fellowship focuses on strategic assignments and requires strong professional experience in areas relevant to the Bank's activities. Applicants are expected to demonstrate skills in areas including strategy, development policy, project management, research and data analysis.
Another Fellow is placed at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The fellowship provides an opportunity to work within a major UN regional institution and gain experience related to economic development, policy and strategic work in Africa. The UNECA vacancy listing confirms a 20 November 2026 application deadline for the 2027 programme.
The International Trade Centre in Geneva is the third host institution for the Ibrahim Leadership Fellowship.
The placement provides exposure to international trade and development work while giving the selected Fellow the opportunity to develop professional and leadership skills in an international institutional environment.
The fellowship is designed for experienced African professionals rather than recent graduates.
According to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, applicants must generally:
Be a national of an African country.
Hold at least a Master's degree.
Have at least seven years of relevant professional experience.
Be under 40 years of age, or under 45 for women with children.
Have relevant professional and leadership experience.
Meet any additional requirements specified by the selected host institution.
The Foundation describes eligible applicants as young professionals, mid-career professionals and new executives.
Applicants applying for the African Development Bank placement should carefully review the AfDB-specific requirements because additional conditions apply.
For example, the AfDB states that applicants should have relevant experience, strong communication and leadership skills, and experience in areas such as strategic planning, project management, policy development and data analysis. Government officials, active military personnel and political party leaders are not eligible for the AfDB fellowship placement.
Applicants should prepare their documents before starting the application process.
Depending on the host institution, applicants may be asked to provide documents such as:
An updated Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Academic certificates or evidence of qualifications
Academic transcripts where required
Letters of recommendation
Evidence of relevant professional experience
Other documents requested by the selected host institution
For example, the AfDB's 2027 vacancy specifically requests a comprehensive CV, academic transcripts and three letters of recommendation.
Applicants should therefore read the requirements for their preferred host institution carefully rather than submitting the same documents without checking the relevant instructions.
Applications are submitted through the relevant host institution's application process.

The programme provides a $100,000 stipend for the 12-month Fellowship. However, applicants should read the specific terms for their host institution because the exact arrangements for travel, insurance and other benefits can vary.
For the AfDB placement, for example, the Bank states that official mission travel expenses, including travel insurance, are covered, while the Foundation provides arrangements relating to medical insurance, child education and retirement. The terms also state that the Fellowship is not a regular AfDB staff position and does not guarantee future employment with the Bank.
Therefore, applicants should not treat the Fellowship as a permanent job offer.
Before applying, keep the following points in mind:
This is a highly selective leadership fellowship, not a general scholarship.
Applicants need significant professional experience.
A Master's degree is required.
Applicants must be African nationals.
The Fellowship lasts for 12 months.
Three Fellows are selected each year.
The stipend is $100,000.
The host institution may have additional eligibility requirements.
The Fellowship does not automatically lead to permanent employment with the host institution.
Applications should be submitted through official institutional channels.
The programme combines financial support with practical international professional experience.
Selected Fellows can work alongside senior officials, contribute to research and policy-related assignments, build professional networks and gain first-hand exposure to how major regional and international institutions operate.
The experience can be particularly relevant to professionals working in areas such as economic development, finance, international development, public policy, governance, trade, strategy and project management.
Applications opened on 22 September 2026.
The application deadline is 20 November 2026. The official Mo Ibrahim Foundation announcement confirms this deadline.
Selected Fellows receive a $100,000 stipend for the 12-month Fellowship.
The programme selects three Fellows each year, with placements at the AfDB, UNECA and ITC.
