The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is a programme of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and forms part of the Young African Leaders Initiative.
Since its establishment in 2014, the Fellowship has connected thousands of young leaders from countries across Sub-Saharan Africa with leadership and professional development opportunities in the United States.
The 2027 programme will give selected Fellows the opportunity to spend six weeks at a U.S. college or university, where they will take part in academic sessions, professional activities, networking, community service and cultural experiences.
Yes. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a fully funded international fellowship programme for selected participants.
The programme provides support for major costs associated with participation, including:
Round-trip travel between the Fellow's home city and the United States
Support for the J-1 visa process
Accommodation during the programme
Meals during the programme
Domestic travel required for the Fellowship
Participation in the six-week Leadership Institute
Limited accident and sickness benefit coverage
Professional and networking activities
Cultural and community activities
However, applicants should understand that the Fellowship is not a salary or cash grant. The programme does not pay Fellows' normal salaries while they are away from work and does not provide personal spending money or funding for their home organisations.
The six-week Leadership Institute will combine professional and academic activities designed to strengthen participants' leadership abilities.
Activities may include:
Leadership and academic sessions
Professional site visits
Networking with U.S. professionals
Community service
Cultural activities
Practical skills development
Engagement with businesses and other organisations
Opportunities to build international professional relationships
The Leadership Institutes are expected to take place from approximately mid-June to early August 2027.

This track is suitable for professionals working in areas such as:
Entrepreneurship

Professionals applying technology to areas such as agriculture, public health, mining and resource management may also find this track relevant.
This track is intended for professionals working in areas related to:
Governance
Public administration
Accountability
Policymaking
Security
Rule of law
Institutional development
Civil society
Conflict resolution
Applicants must rank all three tracks. However, being selected for the Fellowship does not guarantee placement in the applicant's first-choice track.
Applicants can also indicate that they want to be considered for the Professional Development Experience (PDE).
The PDE is an additional four-week professional placement in the United States with a business, non-profit organisation or government agency.
The placement is designed to provide practical professional experience and help Fellows build relationships with U.S. organisations.
Participation in the PDE is optional and is separate from the main six-week Leadership Institute. For 2027, up to 50 Fellows will be competitively selected for the additional experience.
Applicants interested in the PDE must indicate this during their initial Fellowship application.
Applicants must meet the Fellowship's eligibility requirements.
Generally, applicants must:
Be between 25 and 35 years old on or before 13 October 2026.
Exceptional candidates aged 21–24 may also be considered.
Be a citizen and resident of an eligible Sub-Saharan African country.
Be permanently residing in an eligible country as of 1 February 2027 and at the beginning of the Fellowship.
Be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
Be eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa.
Not be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Not be an employee or immediate family member of a U.S. Government employee.
Not be a previous Mandela Washington Fellowship alumnus or participant.
Be able to participate fully in the Fellowship programme.
The U.S. Department of State also confirms that applicants must meet the citizenship, residency, age, visa and other eligibility requirements before applying.
The Fellowship is open to eligible citizens and residents of Sub-Saharan African countries.
Eligible countries include:
Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Cameroon, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Benin, Togo, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cabo Verde, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Gabon, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.
Applicants should check the official application instructions because eligibility and visa considerations can affect individual applications.
No university degree is specifically required.
The Fellowship looks at applicants' leadership experience, professional accomplishments, community involvement and potential to contribute to their communities.
Therefore, applicants should not assume that they are automatically ineligible simply because they do not have a university degree.
Members of the military, defence ministries, police and other law-enforcement organisations may also apply if they meet the other requirements.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship is competitive, so applicants should take time to prepare their applications carefully.
The official Fellowship recommends starting early and making sure application responses are authentic and based on the applicant's own experiences.
A strong application should clearly demonstrate:
Leadership experience
Professional achievements
Community impact
A clear understanding of the challenges in the applicant's sector
Practical plans for using knowledge gained from the Fellowship
Interest in building professional partnerships
Ability to work with people from different backgrounds
Strong communication skills
Adaptability
Applicants should use specific examples rather than making general statements about being a leader.
For example, instead of simply saying that you have "strong leadership skills", explain what you did, who benefited and what changed as a result.
Although a passport is not required to begin the online application, applicants should prepare important personal and professional information in advance.
This may include:
Government-issued identification details
Date of birth
Professional experience
Education history
Training and certifications
Community and volunteer experience
Awards and professional achievements
Languages
Computer and software skills
Publications and presentations
Professional affiliations
Contact information
Previous U.S. travel information, where applicable
Leadership experience
Applicants should also be prepared to answer the Fellowship's personal essay questions.
The application includes several written responses covering areas such as leadership, professional challenges, partnerships and future plans.
Applicants are asked to explain their experiences and demonstrate how they have created impact.
The application also asks applicants to describe:
A significant professional achievement
A challenge in their professional sector
How they could develop partnerships with U.S. organisations
How they would use the knowledge gained after returning to Africa
A difficult professional decision they have made
Applicants considering the optional Professional Development Experience will also answer additional questions.
Applicants should be particularly careful when preparing their essays.
The Fellowship states that applicants may use technology for language-related assistance, such as grammar and spelling support. However, the experiences, ideas, reasoning and substance of the application must belong to the applicant.
The official application guidance also states that applicants who use AI or other technology to help prepare their responses must disclose this where required. Copying material from websites, blogs, previous applicants or other sources can result in disqualification.
